Diving the Submarine Escape Tank.
Looking
for something different or just fancy a dip in clear warm water in the depths of
winter without going overseas?
The
Submarine Escape Training tank is at Fort
Blockhouse (formally HMS Dolphin) Gosport Hampshire. It was constructed during
the late 1940's, and ran its first training course in July 1954. Apart from
occasional shut-down periods for maintenance work the tank has been operational
continuously since it was first commissioned, training approximately 1,500
submariners per year.
The SETT is a 30 metre deep tank with a diameter of 6 metres and a neutral water temperature of 34C. It is an ideal facility for practising deeper emergency drills in a safe environment, doing work up dives, or staying current for deep dives, or just for the novelty of diving the World's only 30 metre tank!
Our visits are usually followed by a 'bimble dive' at Horsea Island for those that feel inclined the following day (with a night on the town) What better way to clear the head!
Numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 14 and are offered to Club members first. The price for the SETT dive is £37.50 (or £44 for a combine Horsea weekend deal) club members may apply for a reserve place (certain conditions apply regarding qualifications etc.).
